Ruth L. Wingfield, 91, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Sovah Health – Martinsville. She was born on June 14, 1933, in Franklin County, Virginia, to the late Homer Talmadge Lawrence and Cordia Jones Lawrence. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, James Leon Wingfield; her son, Mike Wingfield; her stepmother, Melinda Lawrence; her sister, Ann Jamison; and her four brothers, William Lawrence, Morris Lawrence, Walker Lawrence, and Paul Lawrence.

A devoted homemaker, Ruth was a longtime member of Freedom Baptist Church. Ruth’s faith was a guiding force in her life; she read her Bible daily and shared her musical gifts as a member of the church trio and choir. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, often sitting outdoors feeding birds and squirrels. Her love of flowers was evident, and she generously volunteered her time at the Community Storehouse. Above all, she cherished moments spent with her family, to whom she was deeply dedicated.

Ruth is survived by her two sons Marvin Wingfield (Catherine) of Martinsville, Virginia, and Mark Wingfield (Robin) of Martinsville, Virginia; three daughters Kaye Harrell (Perk) of Martinsville, Virginia, Faye Agee of Martinsville, Virginia, and Brenda Reed (David) of Charlotte, North Carolina; her daughter in law, Angie Wingfield of Patrick County, Virginia; nine grandchildren: Emily Harrell, Eric Harrell, Ashley Agee, Kasey Craven, Tiffany Wingfield, Morgan Callaham, Blake Reed, Autumn Wingfield, and Saidie Wingfield; along with eight great-grandchildren and a host of extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.

A funeral service to honor Ruth’s life will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 3:00pm at the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, officiated by David Reed. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow immediately at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville, Virginia.
