Obituary For Velma Hopkins McGhee

Velma Hopkins McGhee, 92, of Fieldale, Va., passed away on Monday, December 8, 2025.

She was born February 20, 1933, to Sanford Lee Hopkins and Lela Hester Hopkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Frank Gray McGhee; her son, Edward Dwayne McGhee; and her brothers, Alvin Hopkins, Vernon Hopkins, and Joseph Hopkins; sisters, Lessie Stone, Betty Richardson, and Ann Stowe.

She is survived by her son, Brian McGhee (Lynn Scott); daughter, Lisa Eanes (Jay); grandchild, Joseph McGhee; sister-in-law; several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and beloved fur baby, Levi.

Mrs. McGhee graduated from Fieldale High School in 1952. She retired from DuPont, where she worked in the Denier room and air conditioning for 33 years. She loved traveling throughout the country and taking cruises to the Caribbean

Islands and South America. She and her husband also resided in Florida and appreciated all of nature’s beauty. She enjoyed dining out with her family and

taking rides through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her favorite Bible verse wasRomans 8:28-“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” She lived a life defined by kindness, warmth, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to her family.

The family would like to extend gratitude for the excellent care and support from Drs. Favero, Kahn, and Hamdy, as well as the staff from Amedisys HospiceCare.

Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and the SPCA.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, with the funeral service to follow at 1:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Hwy, Bassett, VA. Burial will follow in the Ferd-Walter McGhee Family Cemetery, Ferrum, VA
