Obituary For Velma Vernisha Carter

On Tuesday, November 8, 2022, Velma Vernisha Carter, 70, of Preston Rd., Martinsville transitioned to be with her Lord and Savior at SOVAH-Health Martinsville. Born in Virginia, on December 15, 1951, she was the daughter of the late William Levi Carter, and the late Myrtle Lee Carter.

Velma was a faithful member of Alpha Apostolic Faith Temple, where she served in various capacities including Financial Secretary, the Choir, Vice-President of the Missionary Department, and Financial Secretary for the United Way of The Cross Churches of The Apostolic Faith. Prior to working as a Sales Representative for Bassett Office Industries, Velma worked in the Banking Industry for many years.

Velma leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Andra’e Matthews, and Sean Matthews both of Martinsville, VA; one sister, Patricia Via of Martinsville, VA; three brothers, William Carter of Martinsville, VA, Kenneth Carter of Bassett, VA, and Dennis Carter of Greensboro, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A visitation service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 p.m. at the Greater International Pentecostal Assembly Building, 980 Carver Rd., Martinsville, VA with Bishop Waverly Cousin, Eulogist. Burial will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 11, 2022, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. In accordance with the CDC, a face covering, and social distancing is required.
