Storms knock out power in city and county

Severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and high winds passed through yesterday evening, knocking out power along Lanier Road, Meadowview Lane, and Kenmar Drive in the city. This morning, AEP reports 260 customers without power in Henry County, 164 of them near the Cloverleaf around the U.S. 220 and U.S. 58 intersection just south of Martinsville. Another 71 customers are without power just east of Axton near Lake Sugar Tree Motorsports Park. Power is estimated to be restored by 10 p.m. tonight.

Isolated thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and gusty winds are possible again this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow. Surface boundaries combined with upper level energy for the rest of the week increase the chance of showers and thunderstorm each afternoon and evening through early next week while conditions remain warm and muggy.

The weather caused the cancellation of last night’s game at Hooker Field between the Mustangs and the Bigfoots. The two teams will play tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Boone. Martinsville is 14-16, 5.5 games out of first with 17 games left in the season, including nine home dates.
