A 23-year-old Collinsville man, Joel Hernandez, was arrested after a 2:15 a.m. April 18 incident in which he threatened self-harm and approached officers while holding what appeared to be a firearm.
Authorities said Hernandez, a former Martinsville police officer, made statements suggesting “suicide by law enforcement” and ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon.
An officer used a less-lethal device to subdue him. The weapon was later identified as an airsoft gun.
Investigators also allege Hernandez assaulted his girlfriend earlier. He faces charges including brandishing a firearm, obstruction of justice, and unlawful wounding, and is held on a $7,500 bond.
