On March 8, 2025, deputies with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on a white Chevy Suburban on Axton Rd. in Henry County. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Gary Wayne Tilley Jr., 40, of 351 Beeson Rd South, Eden, North Carolina, failed to stop and fled the scene, disregarding the deputies’ emergency lights and siren.
The pursuit continued down Axton Rd, into Eden, North Carolina, where the suspect continued to operate his vehicle at high speeds. The chase proceeded down Hwy 14 before turning onto Old Hwy 87. Due to the suspect’s dangerous driving, which posed a significant threat to public safety, a deputy with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (P.I.T. Maneuver) to stop the vehicle.
During the P.I.T. maneuver, the driver attempted to avoid being spun out by over-correcting his vehicle, which caused the Chevy Suburban to flip onto its roof in the roadway. Thankfully, neither the male driver nor his female passenger sustained any injuries. Both individuals were checked out by EMS at the scene.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that Gary Wayne Tilley Jr. had an outstanding arrest warrant from North Carolina. He was taken into custody where he was charged with Felony Eluding Police as well as being served the outstanding warrant for misdemeanor larceny. Mr. Tilley is currently held in Rockingham County Adult Detention Center awaiting extradition.
