Obituaries

Fredrick "Freddie" Lee Payne, 70, of Penhook, Virginia, passed away Monday, October 9, 2023, at his home. He was born on March 27, 1953, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Douglas Craig and the late Shirley Payne Craig. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death, by his brother Kirk Craig, and his beloved grandson, Zach Witty.

Fredrick was a member of the United States Army's 82nd Airborne Division. He also worked as a brick mason. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, woodworker extraordinaire, professional piddler, and self-proclaimed mountain doctor.

Fredrick is survived by his wife of 35 years, Wanda Payne; daughter, Tammy Poore (Dustin); stepson, Wayne Witty; sister, Lisa Joyce (Gary); godson, Colin Walker; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews; one special great-nephew, Avery Wilson; and a number of beloved friends and in-laws.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Phillip Woods officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, 3464 Mt. Carmel Road, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151, with military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
