Obituaries

On Monday, October 30, 2023, Gloria Jean “Mama Jean” Hodge 82, of Stoney Mountain Rd., Martinsville transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life at her residence. She was born in Henry County, VA on May 12, 1941, the daughter of Samuel D. Millner, and Gertrude Nance Millner who preceded her in death.

In addition to her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Donald James Hodge; two sisters, Janie Carter, and Dena Watkins, and three brothers, Melvin L. Millner, James H. Millner, and Wallace O. Millner.

Gloria was a faithful member of Shiloh Way of the Cross Church where she was a member of the Adult Choir, was a Sunday School Teacher, and was a member of the Culinary Committee. She retired from Tultex Apparel after 33 years of dedicated service. Gloria was a graduate of George Washington Carver High School class of 1960.

Those left to cherish her memory include: three daughters, Donna Hodge, Debra Gravely, and Danita Barbour (Eric) all of Martinsville, VA; two sisters, Juanita King of Atlantic City, NJ, and Carolyn Hairston (Michael) of Martinsville, VA; one brother, Douglas Millner (Mildred) of Greenwood, SC; two grandchildren, Neishia Webster, and Brandon Stockton; eleven great-grandchildren; two God children, Ricky, and Porcha; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A visitation service will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023, from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 noon at Shiloh Way of the Cross Church, 938 Brookdale St., Martinsville, VA with Presiding Bishop Earley Dillard, Eulogist. The burial will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 1310 Carver Rd., Martinsville, VA. A public viewing will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2023, at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville, VA between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will be receiving friends at the residence, 2220 Stoney Mountain Rd., Martinsville, VA between the hours of 12 noon till 7 p.m.
