Obituary For Lois Virginia Quadrio
Lois Virginia Fulcher Quadrio died on June 15, 2025, in Lynchburg, VA. Born in Spray, NC, on December 31, 1924, she was predeceased by her husband, Gerald John Quadrio, her parents, Sallie Hodges Shelton Fulcher and Peter William Fulcher, one brother, seven half-brothers, four half-sisters, three nephews, and a niece.
She is survived by her daughter, Robin Simpson Blackman (William) of Lynchburg, VA, two grandsons, John Blackman (Erica) of Mechanicsville, VA, and Will Blackman (Courtney) of Lynchburg, VA, and six great-grandchildren, Andrew, Michael and Emily in Mechanicsville, and Addison, Parker, and Emma in Lynchburg. Her surviving nieces are Lisa Hubbard, Betsy Fulcher, Marie Nolen, and Suzanne Simpson. Her great-nieces and great-nephews include Sarah McCormick, Sally Hubbard, Kayla Gwaltney, Susan Haskins, Susan Green, Christopher Reed, Anne McCollough, George Via, John Via, Walter Via, Henry Via, Charlie Fulcher, and Carrie Smith. She is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Emily Quadrio of Mebane, NC, Erin Wallace of Asheboro, NC, and Brian Quadrio of San Francisco, CA.
Lois worked as a machine operator at Fieldcrest Mills for 47 years. While the work was hard, she often worked back-to-back shifts. It was here that she met Gerry Quadrio, her future husband. She was a lifelong, active, and devoted member of Fieldale Baptist Church. She worked in the church library, and loved taking care of little ones in the church nursery.
She never met a stranger, and made friends everywhere she went. She even introduced herself to the president of Madison College at a student reception and engaged him in a long conversation. Lois loved animals. She always had cat food in bowls on her porch, and had a steady stream of neighborhood and feral cats at her house. They wouldn’t let her touch them, but she fed them anyway. She thoroughly enjoyed her grand-dogs and grand-cats in Lynchburg as well. On one occasion, she sat on the floor during a thunderstorm and read a story to calm our terrified black lab, Max.
After her retirement, she became an avid walker, hoofing it through the streets of Fieldale, often twice daily with her friend, Bea Schlueter. Lois loved to bake, and is widely known for her cold oven poundcake, or, as it is better known, her Fieldale poundcake. She often baked and mailed it to friends and family members out of town. And she loved to cook for her grandsons and their friends whenever she visited. Her grandsons have fond memories of her country style steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, and fresh corn (always cut off the cob).
She moved to Lynchburg in 2019 in order to be closer to family. She made many new friends here, and treasured her daily phone conversations with Maggie Moore whom she met at The Williams Home.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 1 PM at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville. The Rev. Dr. William A. Davis, Jr., of Richmond, will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Bill, John, and Will Blackman, Bruce Nolen, Wally Thompson, and Bob Gray.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Low Cost Veterinary Clinic Capital Campaign for the Lynchburg Humane Society (1211 Old Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502), or a charity of your choice.
