Nell Thornton Waldron, 79, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 17th at Mulberry Creek Nursing Center surrounded by her family. Nell was born on May 16th, 1945 to Paul and Dorothy Thornton. Nell was a devoted wife, mother, and a cherished grandmother & great-grandmother. Nell was known to babysit not only her own grandchildren, but also many of her friends’ children over the years. She was a wonderful cook and made the best buttermilk biscuits on the planet. She had a green thumb and filled her yard with beautiful trees, plants and flowers. She was a loving, giving friend to all and never met a stranger. She often opened her home to any in need.

She was preceded in death by her: father, Paul Thornton; mother, Dorothy Thornton; step-mother, Marlene Thornton; sister, Ann Key; husband, Neal Waldron; son, Mark Waldron; grandson, Zach Martin. Surviving are her: daughter, Kelly Proffitt (Ron), daughter-in-law, Marie Waldron, stepson, Greg Waldron (Tammy); sister, Linda Stone; brother, Russell Thornton (Iris), grandsons, Brett Stone (Amanda), Logan Waldron, and Blake Martin (Brittany); granddaughters, Abigail and Kara Proffitt; great-granddaughters, Saylor Stone, Brielle, Emersyn, Lilly & Valorie Martin; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Nell leaves behind some very special friends; Gloria Stone, Nancy Proffitt, and her Mulberry Creek roommate, Nancy Stanley.

Visitation will be held at Roselawn Chapel & Funeral Home in Martinsville at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 23 with the funeral following at 2:00 PM at Roselawn Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
