Obituaries

Rudolph “Rudy” O’Neal Pilson, 62, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2025, at Sovah Health – Martinsville. Born on March 3, 1963, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Lennis Pilson Jr. and Mary E. Pilson, who survives. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Greg Pilson.

Rudy was a proud graduate of Bassett High School and later attended Norfolk State University. He spent several years living and working in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and when back home, he occasionally attended Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Employed by Eastman as a Security Guard until he became disabled, Rudy was also a devoted sports fan—especially of the Pittsburgh Steelers and UNC Tar Heels. Known for his thoughtful nature, he had a unique way of helping others by keeping the vehicles of family and friends clean. Rudy treasured every moment spent with his loved ones.

He is survived by his mother, Mary E. Pilson; his brother, Coy Pilson (Donna); his sister, Benita Martin; as well as two nieces, a nephew, two great nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends who will sincerely miss him.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Harold Carelock officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A burial will follow at the Carver Memorial Gardens.
