Obituaries

Ruth Hairston Patterson, 62, of Martinsville, Virginia, transitioned to her heavenly home Monday, November 3, 2025. She was born July 23, 1963, in Martinsville, Virginia to the late James Howard Hairston and Ethel Turner Hairston.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Evangelia Williams; and brother, DeWayne Turner.

Ruth was of strong Christian faith, loved going to church, singing in the choir, loved fellowshipping with others and sharing the love of God. She proudly graduated from Old Dominion University and had a passion for teaching; and loved her job and students dearly. Ruth loved to laugh and cherished every moment spent making memories with those she loved. She had a giving spirit and found joy in helping others, including taking people thrift shopping. More than anything, Ruth loved her family; especially her grandchildren and her great grandchild who filled her heart with joy.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, George Patterson; daughters, Taishia Martin, and Nashanda Martin; son, Marniquis Martin; sisters, Audrey Lloyd, and Sandra Williams; brothers, Donnie Turner, Gary Turner, Thomas Hairston, and Troy Hairston (Trina); six grandchildren; one great grandchild; a special son, Dominio “the dog”; and numerous extended family and friends.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 12:00 PM with Rev. Debra Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens. A Visitation will be held Sunday, November 16, 2025, one half hour prior to the service. A Floating Visitation will be held Saturday, November 15, 2025 from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel.
