Obituary For Ruth Kravitz
Ruth Kravitz of Martinsville, VA died peacefully Thursday, October 12, 2023, comforted and surrounded by all of her children.
Born December 5, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Joseph Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Martin Kravitz, and her sisters, Frances Sonnenberg and Bea Baram of Santa Fe, NM.
She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn College, studying Psychology and English Literature. She worked for the New York State Employment Service in New York as the personal secretary to the Director.
She married her husband in 1953 and moved to Martinsville that same year.
She was a past Sunday school teacher at Ohev Zion Synagogue and was a member of the A to Z Book Club for 35 years until it disbanded. She worked as a volunteer at the Piedmont Arts Association, and owned and operated Pants Corner, a retail store in downtown Martinsville. She retired in 1986 to pursue her hobbies in painting and travel.
She became a loyal and supportive member of the YMCA for many years. Ruth enjoyed many years at the YMCA which promoted living a healthy lifestyle and created great social interactions.
She was a devoted mother and is survived by three children, Rona Kravitz of Ashburn, VA, Ira Kravitz (Lisa) of Dallas, TX and Dr. Les Kravitz (Edita) of Atlanta, GA. She was a loving grandmother and leaves 6 grandchildren, Fara Klein, Jeff Klein (Amy), Alexa Kravitz, Jayme Kravitz (Cameron), Rachel Kravitz and Michael Kravitz, She also leaves two great-grandchildren, Maura and Adam Klein.
Ruth would like to be remembered for her love of family and caring for others.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Sunday, October 15, 2023 at the Ohev Zion Synagogue, 803 Parkview Avenue, Martinsville, VA and will be officiated by Nadav Avital. Burial for close family and congregants will follow at the Ohev Zion Cemetery in Ridgeway, VA.
