Obituaries

On the morning of April 17, 2025, Shirley Joyce Sanders, lovingly known as Mimi by her

family, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior. Shirley was born on

March 6, 1940 in Martinsville, VA, and was always known for her southern accent she

inherited from her hometown. Shirley and Gary Sanders raised their family in Northern

Virginia and later enjoyed their retirement in Cary, North Carolina. They celebrated over

50 years of marriage. In 2016 Shirley relocated to Gainesville, VA where she made

some lifelong friends and enjoyed an abundance of activities.

Shirley was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend to all she met.

She had no greater joy than helping others and often lending a helping hand. Shirley is

preceded in death by her husband Gary; father, Charlie Joyce, and his wife, Annie Lee;

her brother Charlie Jr.; and her sister Barbara Jean. She is survived by her four children

Kim, Michelle, Kevin and Paul, and their spouses. She was the proud grandmother to

nine beloved grandchildren. Her family cherished her and remembers her fierce love,

dedication and loyalty which greatly impacted us all. Her absence will be deeply felt by

all those that had the privilege to know her during her remarkable life.

She lived a vibrant life with an enthusiasm that was contagious, and she was always

looking for the next adventure. Despite facing many health challenges, Shirley exhibited

unparalleled strength and tenacity which inspired us all. Truly, a life well lived! Her

family and friends will forever hold dear the memories of her kind spirt, unwavering faith,

servant’s heart and genuine love she shared with everyone around her.

There will be a celebration of life and a graveside service on May 2, 2025 4:00 PM at

Pleasant Grove Christian Church in her hometown of Martinsville, VA.
