Obituary For Stephen Roy Whitlock
Stephen Roy Whitlock, 75, of Greenville, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, after a courageous three-year battle with kidney cancer. He was born on December 7, 1947, in Martinsville, VA, to the late Roy Whitlock and the late Peggy Hudson Whitlock Chaney.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Hodges Whitlock, two daughters: Stephanie Dicken (Eric) of Greenville, NC, and Sara Heath (Marc) of Wilmington, NC, and five grandchildren: Aaron, Emily, and Ivy Dicken and Anamarie and Isabela Heath. He is also survived by one sister, Gail Combs (Gary) of Martinsville, VA.
“Steve” grew up in Fieldale, VA, and was a 1966 graduate of Fieldale-Collinsville High School. He received an Associate degree in Electronics Technology from Danville Community College. After serving in the U.S. Army with the Signal Corps, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronics Engineering from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Mr. Whitlock taught Electronics Engineering courses at both Tidewater Community College and Danville Community College in Virginia.
After his teaching career, Mr. Whitlock was employed by several conveyor industries in Lynchburg, VA, where he worked as an electronics engineer throughout the United States as well as in foreign countries such as Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, and Singapore. When he left the conveyor installation industry, Steve moved to the Greenville, NC, area where he taught Electronics Engineering courses at Pitt Community College until 2023. Mr. Whitlock was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.
If you knew Steve, you know that he had a love for learning and because of his knowledge in so many areas, he could discuss almost any subject with you for a long period of time. Steve will best be remembered for his kind and friendly spirit which allowed him to help many people. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather.
The family would like to express appreciation to ECU Health Oncology and Liberty HomeCare and Hospice Services for their care over Steve.
The family will receive friends during visitation from 6:00-8:00 pm on Friday, October 13, 2023, at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville, VA. A graveside burial will be held at Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 11:00 am.
