On November 6, 2024, deputies with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office attempted to arrest a wanted person known to be located at 394 Woodhaven Rd. in Martinsville, VA. While on scene, it was determined that Samuel Dewey Franklin Jr., 37, of the same address was barricade inside of the residence and refused to comply with commands to exit.
Deputies with the Henry County SWAT Team and Crisis Negations Team were contacted to assist. During the course of negotiations, it was determined that a second wanted person, April Michelle Cannoy, 44, of Bassett, VA was currently barricaded inside of the residence with Franklin.
Effective communication was established by CNT with Cannoy, resulting in her peacefully exiting the residence and being taken into custody without incident. However, Franklin remained barricade inside of the residence and refused to exit.
After prolonged negotiations, it became evident that Franklin was not willing to peacefully surrender. To prevent further escalation, the SWAT Team deployed chemical munitions into the residence which displaced Franklin and led to him being taken into custody without further incident.
Samuel Dewey Franklin Jr., 37 years of age, 394 Woodhaven Rd., Martinsville, VA, was arrested on the following charges:
- Violation of Virginia Code Section §18.2-456; Failure to Appear (M)
- Violation of Virginia Code Section §18.2-456; Failure to Appear (M)
- Violation of Virginia Code Section §18.2-128; Failure to Appear (F)
- Violation of Virginia Code Section §18.2-460; Obstruction of Justice (M)
April Michelle Cannoy, 44 years of age, 2695 Riverside Dr. in Bassett, VA, was arrested on the following
charge: - Violation of Virginia Code Section §19.2-306- Probation Violation (F)
Samuel Dewey Franklin Jr. and April Michelle Cannoy are both being held in the Henry County Adult Detention Center under No Bond.
