Obituaries

Gerardo Lamarr Gilbert, of Bassett, VA, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at Sovah Health - Martinsville. He was born on January 30, 1956, to the late John H. and Sallie Gilbert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, John Henry Gilbert Jr., and Jesse Gilbert, and two sisters, Betty J. Mattox, and Cindera G. Martin.

Gerardo was a people person. He enjoyed dancing and spending time with his family and friends. He was outstanding in track and football. He enjoyed attending church and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He served our country as a proud member of the Air Force.

Gerardo is survived by his four sisters, Christine Manns, Diana (Beatrice) Johnson, Linda (Roger) Pace, and Dorothy (Jr.) Clark; his three brothers, Israel Gilbert, Chester (Betty) Gilbert, and Alfred D. Gilbert (Donnell); and a host of other family and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023, at 12:00 PM at the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Taylor Tolliver officiating. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the funeral service and at other times at the home of his niece, 221 Garnett Via Ridge Rd. Bassett, Virginia 24055. The burial will take place at Hagwood Cemetery.
