Obituaries

Hazel Ann Handy, 86, of Bassett, Va., passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at her home.

Born on August 31, 1936, in Henry County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Raymond Spencer and Belle Spencer. Hazel was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Howard Handy; sisters, Barbara Simmons and Nancy Bowman; and her niece, Jeannie Kendrick.

Hazel was the owner of Hazel’s Crafts, but her true passion lay in ministering to others. She was a longtime member of Mount Hermon Church and a devoted parishioner. Hazel’s other passion was spending time with her loving family and many friends.

Hazel is survived by her daughters Teresa Bowman Reed and her husband Mike, and Deborah Handy Ashworth and her husband Joe; her son Nash Bowman, Jr.; her grandchildren: Jessica Ashworth, Joeleana Hutchens, Taylor Walker, T.J. Reed, and Tony Branch; eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; nieces Susan Bartlett, Rebecca Ferguson, and Dixie Fitzgerald; nephew Mike Branch, and Hazel’s special friend and soul sister Sharon Byrd.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, November 3, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren Church Cemetery with Pastor Noel Naff officiating.

In lieu of flowers, Hazel’s family requests memorial contributions be made to: Men’s or Women’s Group of Mount Hermon, 144 Mount Hermon Church Road, Bassett, VA 24055.
