Obituary For James David Draper III
In Loving Memory of James David Draper III, affectionately known as Jay Dee.
On a summer day in Greensboro, NC, Eleanor Bowles and James David Draper Jr of Martinsville, VA welcomed their beloved son, James David Draper III, into the world. Known fondly as Jay Dee, he lived a life filled with passion, purpose, and unwavering commitment to the sport of golf. His journey began on July 18th, 1976, and though he left this world on August 5th, 2023, his legacy continues to shine brightly.
Jay Dee's educational journey took him through Carlisle High School, where his dedication and tenacity laid the foundation for his future accomplishments. He continued his pursuit of knowledge at Johnson C Smith and triumphantly graduated from Winston Salem State University, solidifying his commitment to excellence.
Golf was not just a sport for Jay Dee; it was his canvas for inspiration and a means of connecting with others. His remarkable athletic prowess led him to achieve numerous accolades, including winning the National Minority Collegiate Championship his freshman year at Johnson C. Smith University and the CIAA conference championship his sophomore year. His dedication to his craft was evident as he took on the role of Director of Golf at Beaver Hills Golf Course and later as a Golf Coach at Patrick Henry Community College. He was also a Brand Ambassador & Creative Director for VA Bespoke Sportswear.
A visionary and a trailblazer, Jay Dee founded 3rd Generation Golf & Black Golf Talk, an endeavor that would touch the lives of countless individuals. Through his guidance, mentorship, and passion for the game, he imparted his wisdom to hundreds of golf students, nurturing their skills and instilling within them a love for golf that will endure.
Jay Dee's affiliation with esteemed organizations such as the PGA Works and First Tee showcased his commitment to fostering growth within the golf community. His influence extended far beyond the course, as he actively engaged with these organizations to make a lasting impact on young lives.
In his personal realm, Jay Dee was engaged to a loving fiancé, Tennille Jamison, and was a proud father to his four cherished children: Jailyn, JaiMyiah, Jamilla, and Jordan, who are now left in the care of their devoted mothers, Shakina Oates & Toshoni Hairston. His love for them knew no bounds, and his legacy of compassion, dedication, and resilience lives on in each of them.
Among his close-knit family, Jay Dee shared a special bond with his siblings, Shamina and Patrick. Though he was preceded in death by his father, James David Draper Jr, the memories of their shared moments continue to bring solace and strength to those who loved him.
As we bid farewell to Jay Dee, let us remember the profound impact he had on the world of golf and the hearts he touched along the way.
