Obituaries

Richard Calvin Penn, 68, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at his residence. He was born November 22, 1954, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Jessie Penn and Julia Hairston Penn. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jessie Penn, Jr.

He was a 1973 graduate of Drewry Mason High School, and proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1972 to 1977. He had been employed at Marva Maid Dairy for 31 years. He enjoyed fishing, and working on cars, and was a fan of the Tennessee Titans.

Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia McDuffie Penn; mother, Julia Hairston Penn of Martinsville, Virginia; sons, Quanti King of Newport News, Virginia, Calvin Penn of Pennsylvania, Kyle Richardson of Hampton, Virginia, and Richard Anthony Penn of Petersburg, Virginia; sisters, Lillie Martin, Juanita Rucker (Nick), Lizzie Wooten (Ronald), Brenda Penn and Susie Penn of Martinsville, Virginia; brother, William Penn of Danville, Virginia; nine grandchildren, Zoey Richardson, Zaire King, Landyn Penn, Indya Penn, Victor Penn, Londyn Penn, Milan Penn, Amani Penn, and Harbor Penn; aunts, Nora Hairston and Susie Hairston; Godchild, Tasha Brown of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and many more nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at Fair Haven Memorial Park with Rev. Harvey Penn officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 8, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Wright Funeral Service Chapel.
