There were four new entries in the top 10: the horror film Hokum, starring Adam Scott, in at #5; a new take on George Orwell’s Animal Farm at #6; the survival thriller Deep Water at #8; and in at #9 is what must surely take the prize for the longest film title of the year, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea. RZA says he and Shameik Moore might have Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan ‘thing going on’

RZA’s One Spoon of Chocolate is now in U.S. movie theaters, starring Shameik Moore as Unique, a newly released prisoner and military veteran trying to rebuild his life in Ohio.

After collaborating with Shameik on Cut Throat City and Wu-Tang: An American Saga, RZA explains why he tapped him for the movie.

“I’m really a fan of him as an artist. I really think he has something special,” he tells ABC Audio. “Every time we work together, I see him sponge up the material, and I see him just lose his self and become the energy that I need. And he does it in a very unique way. I won’t describe his process, but I’m a fan his work.”

RZA even compared their working relationship to other notable director-actor duos.

“It seems like my energy through him as a director to an actor, I don’t know, we might have a Denzel [Washington]/Spike Lee thing going on … or Ryan Coogler/Michael B. [Jordan]. I don’t know, but I love working with him,” he says.

The film also reunites RZA with Quentin Tarantino, with whom he worked on The Man with the Iron Fists and Django Unchained. “We’re family. … We’re brothers,” RZA says.

One Spoon of Chocolate follows Unique as he relocates to Ohio after prison, hoping for a fresh start. Instead, he becomes the target of a racist sheriff and team tied to missing Black men in the town. He prepares for vengeance by reading a survivalist handbook, inspired by a book RZA received 15 years ago.

“I actually own land in Ohio,” RZA says, “and so one of my friends had gave me a book on … how to start a fire, how to get a fish … how they do all these things, and so I took that idea.”

Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ gets wide theatrical release, moves to 2027

Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is getting a full theatrical release.

Netflix has announced that Gerwig’s film adaptation of the novel by C.S. Lewis will get a full, wide theatrical window. It’s also switching release dates. The movie will begin sneak previews on IMAX screens on Feb. 10, 2027, with a global wide release on Feb. 12, 2027. It will drop to Netflix on April 2, 2027.

This is a change from the film’s previous release plan, a two-week global run on IMAX screens after opening in movie theaters on Thanksgiving Day 2026, before a Netflix drop on Christmas Day a month later.

This release strategy is a rare occurrence for the streamer. While Netflix does sometimes have limited theatrical releases in order for its titles to qualify for The Oscars, it mostly prefers to have its films debut on its streaming platform. A press release from Netflix likened the rarity to the franchise’s popularity.

“A rare phenomenon that spans generations and geographies, Narnia’s release will match the scale and fandom of C. S. Lewis’s beloved books,” according to Netflix.

Gerwig wrote and directed Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The film stars newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell alongside a star-studded ensemble including Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep.

“I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life,” Gerwig said in a press release. “I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences changes rules, makes stance on AI ahead of 99th Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced brand-new eligibility rules for the Oscars.

Among the many new changes is a stance on performances created using generative artificial intelligence. The academy has declared that only acting performances “demonstrably performed by humans with their consent will be considered eligible” to be nominated at the ceremony.

Additionally, from this point on, both lead and supporting actors can be nominated for more than one performance in those separate categories. So, for instance, if an actor had two different stand-out lead performances in the same year, they could now be nominated twice in the best actor category.

Another major change will affect the International Film category. Previously, in order to be nominated for that prize, a film had to become a country or region’s official selection, meaning only one film from a specific location could be represented.

Now, non-English language films can be submitted on the basis of having won a qualifying award at an international film festival. The festivals, and their corresponding specific awards that qualify such movies, are Berlin International Film Festival and the Golden Bear, Busan International Film Festival and its Best Film Award, Cannes Film Festival and the Palme d’Or, Sundance Film Festival and its World Cinema Grand Jury Prize, Toronto International Film Festival and its Platform Award, and the Venice International Film Festival and its Golden Lion.

Many other new changes and rules have been established and are available to read on the academy’s website. The 99th Academy Awards will air on ABC in 2027. According to the academy, all rules, regulations and dates for the ceremony are subject to change.

Jensen Ackles on ‘The Boys” ‘Supernatural’ reunion episode: ‘It was fun to watch them struggle’

Misha Collins (Malchemical), Antony Starr (Homelander), Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy) and Jared Padalecki (Mister Marathon) in ‘The Boys.’ (Jasper Savage/Prime Video)

Eric Kripke, the showrunner of Prime Video’s The Boys, also created Supernatural, which ran for 15 seasons on The WB and then The CW. Kripke then cast that show’s star, Jensen Ackles, in The Boys as Soldier Boy, but the series’ latest episode is a full-on Supernatural reunion.

In the episode, Antony Starr’s Homelander and Ackles’ Soldier Boy go to LA to talk to a supe named Mister Marathon, who they’re told knows something about V1, a substance that can make Homelander immortal.  Mister Marathon is played by Jared Padalecki, who costarred with Ackles as Sam Winchester in Supernatural.

“They brought him in as a bit of a cameo appearance,” Ackles told ABC Audio. “Kripke’s always got crazy ideas up his sleeve. This certainly was one of them, and we had a lot of fun.”

Also in that episode, Homelander and Soldier Boy encounter another supe, Malchemical, played by Misha Collins, who was Castiel in Supernatural.

“It was good to mix it up with him again, and with Misha as well, and see how they handled the deep end of the Kripke pool that is The Boys,” Ackles added. “I think they did OK, but it was fun to watch them struggle.”

What did the two struggle with? Well, let’s just say there’s a lot of blood and gore, several deaths and general mayhem.

By the way, there are a number of big-name stars who make cameos in that particular scene, in addition to the Supernatural guys. We won’t spoil it, except to say that, in a meta moment, one of them is Seth Rogen, who happens to be one of The Boys‘ executive producers.

RZA hopes to emphasize importance of preparation with ‘One Spoon of Chocolate’

Poster for RZA’s ‘One Spoon of Chocolate’ (36 Cinema Distribution)

RZA’s film One Spoon of Chocolate has moved from the 2025 Tribeca Festival to U.S. movie theaters. The film stars Shameik Moore as Unique, a just-released prisoner and military veteran trying to rebuild his life in Ohio, where RZA spent his teenage years. RZA confirmed parts of the story draw from his own experiences in the state.

“There was a lot of corruption in that town that I spent time in, to be quite honest with you,” RZA tells ABC Audio, recalling what he was told following his 1991 arrest and subsequent acquittal. “My lawyer said to me … ‘I fought so hard for you to win your case because I knew this whole town was corrupt and they wanted you to go down, not because of the case, but because of how you look.'”

“There was some experiences there that definitely found its way into the film,” he says, including racism, though RZA clarifies the story is “less about the villains, but more about the hero.”

“Like how about we get a hero like Shameik Moore … who’s trying to find a better life and yet gets to a place where they’re trying to stop their life from flourishing,” he says.

In the film, Unique makes it his duty to physically confront the sheriff and his team who have been targeting Black men. He reads a survivalist handbook, prepares himself for the moment and ends up victorious.

While there are many themes in the story, RZA emphasizes preparation.

“Every man should walk in the world in peace, but he should always be prepared for the war,” he says, before referencing a quote from in the film. “He says, ‘I didn’t win because I was Black or that I was better than you.’ He said, ‘I was better prepared.'”
