Community meeting held on reassessments

A community meeting sponsored by a local women’s sorority was held at the TAD Space uptown last night. About 25 people discussed the recent real estate tax assessments received by Martinsville property owners earlier this month. Property values have doubled in some cases and are up over 80% in many others.

The meeting was directed by Dallas Hairston, Martinsville’s former senior assessor and attended by Commissioner of Revenue Ruth Easley, Mayor LC Jones, and Councilman Julian Mei.

Hairston offered to help anyone who wanted to appeal their assessment and was critical of what he claimed was a small sampling of sales used to value properties this time. He also suggested most of the properties used were in the Mulberry, Druid Hills, and Forest Park area.
