Obituaries

Allen Cobler, 75, of Martinsville, died on Monday, May 5, 2025. He was born in Martinsville on December 31, 1949, to Claude and Beatrice Cobler. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, niece Ashley, and too many cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins from both the Cobler and Adams families.

Allen is survived by his sisters Jeanie and husband Chris McVay, Janice and husband John Foley; nephews and nieces, Daniel and Crissa Cassell, Jason McVay (daughter, Journey), Kelly and Alex Maser, Ted and Olivia Crowe, David and Ivanna Crowe, Daniel and Ema Foley (sons Archer and John), and David and Stephanie Foley (son, Blaine and daughter, Grace). He is survived by his dear friend and caregiver, Katina Jones and her army of supporting caregivers. His family will forever be grateful for her and her army’s untiring service and care.

Allen was many things—complicated, you might say. He was charismatic, intelligent, and knowledgeable. A jokester, always amusing. He loved keeping people off guard with his stories, jokes, and observations.

But beyond his humor, Allen was a gardener, a guardian of his neighborhood. He was always watching, always aware. If you needed help, he already knew—and he gave, freely, of his time and money to make someone else’s life better.

Those he loved, he loved without limits. Unconditionally.

Allen touched lives, and he will be deeply missed.

The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 13th at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church of Bassett with Pastor Doug Ramsey officiating. Visitation will be at 10:30 am just prior to the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution can be made in his honor to the Bassett Rescue Squad, 1950 Riverside Drive, Bassett, VA 24055.
