Obituaries

Eugene Robert Helms, Jr., 82, of Axton, Virginia, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2023. He was born July 10, 1941, in Boissevain, Virginia, to the late Eugene Robert Helms, Sr., and Nellie Mae Lethcoe Helms.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his spouse, Barabara Weddle Helms; daughter, Deretha Colleen Helms; and one great-great-grandchild.

Eugene was a dedicated employee for Hooker Furniture and other textiles for 65 years. He was married to his loving wife Barbara, for nearly 60 years.

He is survived by daughters, LaDonn Helms Witt, Doreen Helms Bradley (Michael), and Carolyn Locklear (Graham); son, Richard Dean Helms (Diane); sisters, Cynthia “Cindy” Haden (Clark), Teresa King (Cloyd), Sue Leftwich (Rodney), and Rose Crowder (Steve); brothers, Herbert Helms (Pat) and David Helms, Sr. (Linda); grandchildren, Amber Epling, Justin Rea (Tabitha), Devin Rea (Emily), Chelsey Carter (TC), Ashleigh Bradley, and Joshua Bradley; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

All services will be private.
