Obituary For George Ray Shelton Sr.

After a lengthy illness and courageous battle, George Ray Shelton, Sr. of Collinsville, Virginia, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 31, 2024. George was an amazing man who will never be forgotten. George was born June 11, 1931 in Sandy Ridge, North Carolina to Willam Jefferson Shelton and Pearlie Florence Rhodes Shelton. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Paul Freeling Shelton, Glenn C. Shelton, Coy Randolph Shelton, Violet H. Shelton Wilson, Willie Florence Shelton Rakes, Henry Wise Shelton, James Rhodes Shelton, and twin sister, Eva May Shelton. Seven years ago, George lost the love his life, Marjorie Bullard Shelton, after 54 years of marriage. Additionally, he is predeceased by his daughter, Sandra Lackey, and his great granddaughter, Tabatha Rea.

George is survived by his daughters, Betty Hollandsworth, Peggy Harmon, Eva Mayhew and her husband Sandy, and his son and caregiver for the past several years, George Ray Shelton, Jr. He is survived by grandchildren, Mitch Lackey, Teffaney Ebert, Kim Rea, Latisha Kilby, Sabrina Chaney, Samuel Hollandsworth, and Chloe Mayhew, as well as many great grandchildren.

George was a dedicated servant of the Lord, serving as deacon for many years throughout almost 50 years of membership at Mica Road Baptist Church, formally known as Highland Baptist Church. George loved his country, serving many years in the Air Force, before retiring early due to injuries he received in the Korean War. He spent several years in the hospital and rehabilitation before returning to the workforce as a civilian. He later “retired” from Tultex and moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he worked full time for Ocean Lakes Family Campground until health issues in his late seventies forced him to actually retire and return to Collinsville, Virginia.

George loved his family, and they loved him and always will. He was an extraordinarily selfless man, always putting others before himself, up until the very end of his life. He will be greatly missed, but those who have accepted the Lord as their personal savior, will most definitely see him again.

Funeral Services will be held 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 7, 2025, on Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Evans officiating, along with full Military Honors provided by the Martinsville-Henry County Memorial Honor Guard. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
