Obituaries

Hulet Williams Montrief, 77, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was born on October 4, 1946, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late James Rudolph Montrief and the late Juanita Wingfield Montrief. He was preceded in death by his son, Hulet “Monty” Williams Montrief II, and sister, Anne Montrief Bryant.

Hulet is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Cynthia “Cindy” Lackey Montrief; one daughter, Dreama Lynn Montrief Johnson, and son in law, R. Marc Johnson; three grandchildren, Grace Reynoso-Lopez, Alison Bridget Montrief, and Kenneth Emory Montrief; a brother, James “Wink” Wingfield Montrief, and Rudolph “Rudy” Allen Montrief; and a host of other nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Raymond Moorefield officiating. A burial will be held immediately after the service at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville, Virginia.
