Obituaries

Maria Helena Clarke Casarez, 80, of Axton, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at her residence. She was born July 2, 1942 in Edinburg, Texas, to the late Manuel Casares and Maria del Refugio Zuniga Casares. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Bales.

She was a high school graduate and had two years of college; she had been employed as an executive secretary for many years. She also was a liaison for the foreign visiting military forces in the city of El Paso; and was loved by many people. She was active in her community of El Paso, Texas, promoting civic issues and political campaigns across the city and state.

Maria is survived by her daughters, Christian Clarke Casarez and Audrey Scruggs; grandchildren, Jeremy, Jocelyn, Rebecca and Taylor; 13 great-grandchildren; and cousins, Helen Rosales and Gilbert Anzaldua.

The funeral will be Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at 7:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Neil Pressley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private.
