Mary “Lippy” Elizabeth Rigney Mays of Axton, Virginia, passed away January 2, 2024. She was born May 13, 1959, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Clare Adine Scarce Rigney and Edward Swinny Rigney.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Ella Riddle (Glennie), Nancy Heath (Sanford), Shirley Eanes (Charlie); and brother Neal Rigney (Butch).

Mary was a very hard worker who could outwork anyone roofing and was caretaker of the farm. She loved planting flowers and gardening, and lived for her dog, Zeus. She was a down-to-earth country girl with a pure heart that never held back. She was nicknamed “Lippy” for her constant (pleasant) conversation.

She is survived by her husband, Brian Keith Mays; daughters, Melissa Rigney (Emilly) and Brandy Garrett; sisters, Linda Barbour (Dickie), Deloris Lewis (Kenny); brothers, Tommy Rigney (Martina) and Gary Rigney; grandchildren, Madison Rigney (CJ), Collin Garrett, Anna Garrett; great grandchild, Chase Vernon McKinney; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Johnnie Ray Rigney officiating. Burial will follow at Rigney Family Farm Cemetery located at 6803 Medical Center Road, Axton, Virginia 24054. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
