Obituaries

Crystal Dawn Fretwell, age 40, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at her home. She was born on August 23, 1984, in Rocky Mount, Virginia, to John Fretwell and Teresa H. Underwood. Crystal was preceded in death by her brother, David “Lil David” Hunnicutt; her maternal grandparents, David and Bernice Hunnicutt; her paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Deforest Fretwell; and her two step-grandfathers, James Walker and Stanley Underwood.

A proud member of the Bassett High School Class of 2002, Crystal was of the Baptist faith. She had a passion for working with children and worked in childcare. Her love for antique trucks was well known, and she enjoyed collecting them. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her family and friends.

Crystal leaves behind to cherish her memory, her daughter, Amber N. Martin; her mother, Teresa Underwood; her stepfather, Doug Underwood; her father, John Fretwell; her four half-sisters, Morgan Fretwell, Crystal Underwood McBride, Ashley Underwood, Melody Underwood; her step-grandmother, Mary Walker; her niece, Ava Bailey; and other family members and friends.

The family will receive friends on Monday, December 30, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Ron Peal. Interment will immediately follow at the Hunnicutt and Underwood Family Cemetery.
