Obituary For Martha Jo Butler Johnson

Martha Jo Butler Johnson, 78, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 5, 2025, at Franklin Health & Rehabilitation Center in Rocky Mount, Virginia. She was born on July 31, 1946, in Leakesville, North Carolina, to the late George Madison Butler and Eva Fagg Butler. In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Lee Johnson; her brother, Kenneth Butler; her sister, Virginia Pratt; and her niece, DeeDee Gilley.

Martha was a devoted member of Fort Trial Baptist Church, where she was actively involved in ministries such as Stitches of Love, UPWARD, and Sunday School. She was known as a powerful prayer champion, faithfully praying over the students of Fort Trial at the start of each school year and covering them in prayer throughout the year. Martha retired from DuPont after many years of dedicated service. During her time at Franklin Health & Rehabilitation Center, she proudly served as a board member of the Activities Committee.

Martha is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Tim Gary; two grandchildren, Mason Lee Gary (Kaylyn) and Taylor Jo Gary (Rylan); two brothers, George Butler (Patsy) and Eddie Butler (Patricia); one sister, Pam Robertson (Kenny); and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

A celebration of Martha's life will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 5:30pm, at Fort Trial Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Tony Beach. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fort Trial’s Stitches of Love, 170 Oak Level, Stanleytown, Virginia 24168.
