Obituary For Patty Ann Mumford Trent

Patty Ann Mumford Trent of Martinsville, VA passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024. A native of Greensboro, NC, Patty Ann was born on January 20, 1936. Patty Ann was predeceased by her husband, Charles Wyse Trent, III; mother, Sally Tucker Mumford; father, Grover Samuel Mumford; daughter, Sally Hudgins McKoin; grandson, Alston Everett Simmons Trent.

She attended the University of North Carolina – Greensboro (formerly known as Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina), raised a family, and was passionate about many hobbies and interests. One of Patty Ann’s greatest loves was the game of tennis. Her independence and determination fueled her competitive spirit and desire to win every time she stepped on a court. Patty Ann immensely enjoyed being outdoors. She delighted in the beauty of plants, birds and trees. Her adoration of nature was evident in the beautiful flowers and gardens she cultivated over many decades. Patty Ann was a member of the Junior League of Greensboro, NC. The Wednesday Book Club and The Garden Study Club, both of Martinsville and a lifelong supporter of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Courageous and resilient, Patty Ann possessed a quick wit and was adept with finding humor in almost any situation. She has a gift, and it was not uncommon for her to use it, of striking up a conversation and making connections with others. As much as Patty Ann loved traveling and spending time at the beach, she was happiest at home with her beloved dog, Sugar, watching a ball game (Go Tarheels!) and entertaining family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Daniel Edward Hudgins IV of Hendersonville, NC, Polly Hudgins Sare (Terry) of Grand Rapids, MI, Charles Wyse Trent IV (Karen) of Richmond, VA, Charlotte Trent Rinehart (Rob) of Charlottesville, VA, Margaret Trent Gray (Bob) of Richmond, VA, and Kyle Sydnor Trent (Dawn) of Martinsville, VA; 13 grandchildren, Jonathan Sare (Annie) of Otsego, MI, Ann Sare of Grand Rapids, MI, Asheley Sare of Grand Rapids, MI, Trent Sare of Grand Rapids, MI, Charles Trent, V (Taryn) of Richmond, VA, Cole Trent of Richmond, Kate Rinehart Smit (Herman) of South Africa, Gray Rinehart (Pone Han) of Yangon, Myanmar, Hollis Rinehart of Charlottesville, VA, Bradley Gray of Richmond, VA, Banner Gray Odeh (Zaid) of Arlington, VA, Sydnor Trent (Marisol) of Kernersville, NC, and Finley Trent Taylor (Tyler) of Kernersville, NC; and 13 Greatgrandchildren.
