Psychiatrist can testify in triple murder case, but can’t render opinion

Matthew Bernard’s attorneys will be arguing an insanity defense and on Friday Pittsylvania County Circuit Court Judge Stacey Moreau ruled that a psychiatrist will be allowed to testify, but not will not be allowed to given an opinion on whether Bernard was insane when he killed his 62-year-old mother, 25-year-old sister, and her 14-month old son in 2019.

Bernard, who is 23, has been found incompetent to stand trial nine times, but a grand jury indicted him in August after it was determined his competency was restored.
