This release from the Virginia State Police was issued Monday morning:

Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred at 12:07 a.m. Friday (June 21, 2024) on Spruce Street in Henry County.

A 2006 Ford F250 was heading eastbound on Spruce Street when it crossed the centerline and struck a 2012 Jeep Liberty head-on. The F250 then overturned and caught fire while the Jeep went off the left side of the road. The crash occurred just over a quarter-mile west of the intersection of Spruce Street with Old Liberty Drive.

The driver of the Jeep, Michael L. Poynter, 40, of Martinsville, Va., died at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Ford F250, Benjamin C. Dodson, 25, of Axton, Va., suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

Charges are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Virginia State Police have confirmed that Michael Lee Poynter, 40, of Martinsville, died in a two-vehicle, head-on collision on Route 650, three tenths of a mile of Route 620 at 12:07 a.m. on Friday. The investigation is continuing and no other information was made available on the deadly crash that occurred just outside of the city limits.

The Virginia State Police are investigating a vehicle crash that occurred Thursday night on Spruce Street just outside the city limits. The vehicle caught fire and, although unconfirmed at this time, there may have been a fatality. We will provide more information when it becomes available.
