Ararat man arrested after vehicle pursuit

An Ararat man has been charged following a December 26th early morning pursuit, according to Sheriff Dan Smith.

Smith said that deputies had been investigating an incident that had occurred on Christmas day where James Aaron Briggs, 41, was suspected of assaulting his girlfriend and had allegedly made threats to shoot members of her family. Smith also stated that Briggs was a fugitive and had been wanted for several months on a felony probation violation capias issued by Patrick County Circuit Court.

Patrick Sheriff’s Lieutenant Dustin Foley spotted the vehicle Briggs was driving on River Road shortly after 2 AM and attempted a traffic stop, at which time Briggs failed to stop and a pursuit ensued. The chase covered many of the roads in Ararat and Willis Gap, with Briggs allegedly ramming Foley’s vehicle on Lovell Pond Road.

The sheriff advised that Foley attempted unsuccessfully multiple Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuvers on the suspect vehicle. “At one point, Lieutenant Foley had gotten the suspect vehicle spun around from a PIT maneuver and had actually pushed it into a bank, but the suspect was able to spin out and the pursuit continued,” Smith said. Master Deputy Eric Sain became involved in the pursuit shortly afterwards and deployed spike strips at the intersection of Johnson Creek Road and Willis Gap Road.

The suspect vehicle avoided the strips and the pursuit entered Surry County, NC at which time the Surry County Sheriff’s Office became involved and took over the pursuit. The pursuit ended when Briggs’ vehicle ran out of gas in a driveway in Mount Airy. Briggs was taken into custody by NC authorities and charged with multiple offenses. “Two handguns and a large quantity of methamphetamine were found in the suspect’s vehicle,” according to Smith.

Foley charged Briggs with Felony Eluding a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer, and Assault and Battery. Briggs is being held in the Surry County, NC jail without bond. “We are fortunate that Lieutenant Foley was not injured, and damage to his patrol vehicle was minimal due to his push bumper absorbing the damage,” the sheriff stated.
