Obituaries

Mildred Ann Burke, age 61, of Bassett VA. passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023. Mildred was born in Harvedee Grace, MD to the late Earl William Shaffer and Opal Mildred Shaffer (Cochram). She was also preceded in death by a brother, Timothy William Shaffer; and grandparents, James Walter Shaffer and Mary Mae Shaffer.

Mildred is survived by her fiancé, Tommy Bowden; sister, Mary Ann Deal; daughter, Opal Fields; sons, Earl Ray Fields (Melissa) and James William Shaffer; grandchildren, Chase Gross, Athena Fields, Apollo Fields, Oakley McMillan, and Sophia Fields.

Mildred was an amazing mother, loved life, and had a joyful soul. She loved to joke around just to see you smile and laugh. She loved her family with everything in her and was a loyal and faithful companion to Tommy for 17 years. She loved being outdoors, tending to her flowers. She was a very kind person and everyone loved to be around her. She was always truthful with everyone and always made each day count. She loved to play SkipBo and 10,000. She enjoyed being around her family and seeing her grandkids. Mildred will be greatly missed.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2023 at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with Pastor Charles Waller officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
