The Rocky Horror Picture Show is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a new 4K restoration and slate of special events, including a theatrical release in the U.S.
The cult-classic 1975 film has been newly restored and remastered on Blu-ray in 4K Ultra HD by the Walt Disney Studios Restoration team. The entire project took 10 months, and included a digital scan and preservation process that made sure every frame of the film was presented in a new way with unprecedented clarity and vibrancy.
Additionally, the new restoration includes a newly mixed Dolby Atmos audio track to enhance the iconic soundtrack with further depth and dimension. The original mono audio has also been restored, allowing fans to experience the film just as it was when it premiered 50 years ago.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show was directed by Jim Sharman and stars Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon and Tim Curry. It follows a newly engaged couple after their car breaks down on a rainy night. They end up inside the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter for an adventure like they’ve never experienced before.
While theatrical dates for this new restoration have yet to be announced, a press release promises future announcements coming soon.
“It’s a privilege to help preserve the legacy of a film that has meant so much to so many,” Kevin Schaeffer, the director of restoration & library management, said. “Bringing The Rocky Horror Picture Show to life in 4K allows us to honor its bold, genre-defying spirit and ensure that audiences – both longtime fans and first-time viewers – can experience it as it was originally intended, with stunning picture and sound.”

Tom Hanks is set to star in an off-Broadway production of a new play he co-wrote.
Hanks will star in the world premiere of This World of Tomorrow, a brand-new play he co-wrote with James Glossman. It’s based on a series of short stories by Hanks.
This World of Tomorrow is set at the end of the 21st century. Hanks will star as Bert Allenberry, a scientist from the future who embarks on a time-traveling adventure to find true love. Bert finds himself continuously returning to a special day during the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens, New York.
“Out of the collision of technology and desire, nostalgia and history, what life will Bert choose as his own?” the show’s official description asks.
The play will have a limited eight-week run at The Shed’s Griffin Theater in New York. It will be directed by Kenny Leon, who also directed the current production of Othello on Broadway starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal.
This marks the second collaboration between Hanks and Glossman after they previously worked together on the play Safe Home in 2022.
This World of Tomorrow begins previews on Oct. 30 with the limited engagement running through Dec. 21.
Chris Columbus regrets including Donald Trump in Home Alone 2.
The U.S. president makes a seven-second cameo in the 1992 holiday sequel film which Columbus directed. The director recently told the San Francisco Chronicle he wishes he could cut the brief appearance out of it.
“It’s become this curse. It’s become this thing that I wish it was not there,” the director said. “It’s become an albatross for me. I just wish it was gone.”
Columbus, who has Italian ancestry, said he fears if he were to cut out the cameo the Trump administration may deport him.
“I can’t cut it,” Columbus said. “If I cut it, I’ll probably be sent out of the country. I’ll be considered sort of not fit to live in the United States, so I’ll have to go back to Italy or something.”
The brief appearance happens during a scene in The Plaza Hotel. Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, asks Trump for directions to the lobby. “Down the hall and to the left,” Trump responds.
Columbus said Trump allowed him to shoot the movie in the hotel in exchange for the cameo.
“He said I begged him to be in the movie, but there’s no world I would ever beg a non-actor to be in a movie,” Columbus said. “But we were desperate to get The Plaza Hotel.”
